TRREB supports policies in Provincial Planning Statement – Daily Commercial News

TORONTO – The 2024 Ontario Provincial Planning Statement (PPS) was recently released and the Toronto Regional Real Estate Board (TRREB) said it applauds the document for taking another step forward in addressing the pressing need for increased housing supply and improved affordability.

As an advocate for transit-oriented communities, TRREB supports the enhanced focus on transit-oriented development and higher-density housing around major transit hubs, a move that will significantly boost housing availability in high-demand areas while promoting sustainable urban growth, states a release.

By mandating higher densities in these key locations, it will accelerate much-needed housing and also make more efficient use of existing infrastructure, benefiting both homebuyers and renters.

The streamlining of the PPS, with the province reducing both its length and complexity of the 2024 document, was another aspect TRREB was pleased with. A leaner and more streamlined 2024 PPS will make it easier and less costly for planning officials to adopt the new rules into their planning document, the statement indicates.
TRREB supports the commitment in the PPS to building more homes on underused low-density lands, such as shopping plazas, malls and brownfields, which are often located in highly desirable areas of a city or town that require additional municipal support to make development projects feasible.

TRREB is planning work with all levels of government to ensure these policy changes are implemented effectively.
