Toronto homeowners will be hit with a 3.75% hike in waste and water fees in the new year, if city finance officials have their way.

The proposed hike contained in a city report released Tuesday calls for a single-family household to pay   $306.36 for a small trash bin (an increase of $11.07), $371.91 for a medium bin (an extra $13.44), $505.12 for a large bin (a hike of $18.26) and $585.89 for an extra-large bin (a bump of $21.18).

As for water, the increase would require the average household — one that uses 230 cubic metres per year — to kick in an extra $39 annually, boosting the cost to $1,078 in 2025.

The proposed rates and fees will be considered by the city’s executive committee on Dec. 10 and then by city council when it meets from Dec. 17-19.

The new rates won’t be finalized until city council sets its operating and capital budgets early in the new year.

Fees for waste pickup, which includes curb collection of garbage, organic waste, yard waste, oversized and metal items and electronics, also help pay for city-wide litter collection, street and parks bin collection, drop-off depots and the ongoing care of closed landfills.

The fee increase will help the municipality invest in infrastructure renewal and development to address growth, aging systems and climate change impacts, the city says.
