Toronto tops list of car-loving cities in the world: Study

Vroom, vroom, Torontonians, it turns out you love your cars.

New research looking at communities that truly appreciate a fine automobile found Toronto is high on the list.

The folks at Auto Trader U.K. looked at the number of car events, motor shows and social media posts across cities around the world to create a “car-munity” score.

Toronto is not only the No. 1 city in Canada for car-lovers, it also ranked second overall in the global study.

It scored 95.4%, thanks to events like ImportFest and the Canadian International Auto Show, which attract thousands of viewers.

Toronto’s car culture is committed shows and events, while online communities actively share updates and stories from meet-ups.

The top city is Austin, Texas, with a nearly perfect 98.1% score.

Not just renowned for its music scene, the city is also a haven for auto enthusiasts, as seen through the Lonestar Rod & Kustom Round Up, a massive outdoor car show featuring vintage hot rods and custom cars, as well as regular gatherings like Cars & Coffee Austin and the Central Texas Stangs meet-ups dedicated to Ford Mustangs.

In third place was Cape Town, South Africa, with 95.2%.

It boasts events including the Cape Town Motor Show and Cars & Coffee Cape Town where fans can swoon at everything from high-end supercars to classic British automobiles.

Turin, Italy, home of Fiat, is No. 4 with 76.1%, and is deep-rooted in automotive history.

The Automotoretrò, an international exhibition for vintage cars and motorcycles, draws enthusiasts from all over Europe, while the city’s car culture is well-documented by petrolheads on social media.

Rounding out the Top 5 is the first of three German cities on the list, Munich , which also happens to be the headquarters of BMW.

Munich had a score of 68.1% and boasts a thriving motor culture that can catch up at the Munich Classic Car Show and BMW Welt events.

London, U.K. had a score of 61% to finish in sixth, while Warsaw, Poland took seventh place with 58%.

Frankfurt, Germany and Sydney, Australia each scored 57.1% to tie for eighth.

In tenth position was Christchurch, New Zealand with 41%.

Edmonton was the only other Canadian city, just missing out on the Top 10 with a score of 39.3%.

Wolverhampton, U.K.; Geneva, Switzerland; Stuttgart, Germany; Pretoria, South Africa; Madrid, Spain; Shenzhen, China; Koto City, Japan; Naples, Italy; and Manila, Philippines were all in the Top 20.
