Toronto has 2nd worst transit commute time in Canada, U.S.: study

A study of transit commuters worldwide found that Toronto has the second-worst commute time in Canada and the U.S., second only to Vancouver.

Moovit, a commuter app, gathered data from 50 cities in 17 countries to determine trends in commute times, wait times, and transit improvement factors.

Transit commuters in Toronto spend an average of 55 minutes on their commute and will spend one year and seven months throughout their lifetime riding transit. Vancouver residents spend an average of 60 minutes commuting on transit.

Mexico City has the longest commute at 67 minutes, while Venice captured the title for the shortest commute at 42 minutes.

When it comes to wait times, Toronto is tied with New York, Boston, and Chicago, with an average wait time of 14 minutes.

Only 22 per cent of commuters need just one transit line to get to their workplace, the lowest in North America, while another 22 per cent say they needs three or more lines per journey.

According to the app’s survey, 27 per cent of Toronto transit riders say they would ride more often if there were lower fares and 25 per cent said higher frequency of vehicles would make them ride more.
