A GO Transit bus that had its windshield smashed when someone deliberately threw a rock at the occupied vehicle as it travelled on a Toronto-area highway last Saturday night is the latest moving vehicle to be similarly — and dangerously — targeted, police say.
It’s not yet known how many passengers were on board the GO bus when it was struck by the large rock shortly before 11:30 p.m. as it travelled along Highway 48 in Markham, north of Major Mackenzie Drive.
The incident was reported to both York Regional Police and Ontario Provincial Police, the latter saying in a news release on Friday that no injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
OPP said the rock was thrown at the passenger bus by an unknown person, who’s also believed to have similarly targeted vehicles on Highway 48 in Markham back in September.
On Sept. 20, Aurora OPP received several reports of rocks being deliberately thrown at moving vehicles by a person on the side of the highway or in a passing vehicle.
“One of these incidents resulted in a serious collision in which two individuals suffered life-threatening injuries,” police said. “One of those individuals has since stabilized and is in recovery while the second victim remains in critical condition in hospital.”
Police believe all the incidents are related and they’re seeking help from the public in tracking down the person or people responsible. Investigators are also looking for an SUV, possibly light in colour, they believe is connected to all of the rock-throwing incidents.
Anyone who has seen anything suspicious or has information, dashcam or surveillance video that may assist the investigation is urged to call Aurora OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or email [email protected].
Information can also be reported anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at ontariocrimestoppers.ca.
