Ontario Announces Completion of Finch LRT Stops and Stations as Toronto Awaits Line’s Opening | UrbanToronto

Today, the Ontario government announced the completion of all stations and stops for the Finch West Line 6 Light Rail Transit (LRT) project across northwest Toronto. While this brings communities like Rexdale, Emery, and Jane-Finch closer to improved connectivity, an opening date for the LRT service is still to be announced, leaving Torontonians anticipating the next update from the TTC.

“This is a pivotal milestone for commuters in our communities,” said Prabmeet Sarkaria, Ontario’s Minister of Transportation. “We’re advancing the projects that matter most — ensuring fast, reliable, and accessible transit that will connect more people to good-paying local jobs and housing.”

Spanning 11km along Finch Avenue West from Keele Street to Highway 27 and then south to Humber College’s north campus, the Finch West LRT features 18 access points. This includes 16 surface-level stops, plus two underground stations at the terminal points: Finch West and Humber College stations. Line 6 will connect to existing rapid transit infrastructure at Finch West station on the University Line 1 subway.

Line 6 will is meant to reduce gridlock and speed transit on Finch Avenue West by offering a dedicated transit right-of-way capable of moving approximately 46,000 passengers each weekday. With zero-emission vehicles that can carry up to 300 passengers each and reach up to 60km per hour, the line aims for an end-to-end travel time of about 34 minutes. Trains are expected to run every five to seven minutes during peak hours and every seven to ten minutes during off-peak times.

Ahmed Hussen, Minister of International Development and Member of Parliament for York South—Weston, highlighted federal support for transit operations across the country: starting in 2026-2027, the federal Canada Public Transit Fund (CPTF) will contribute an average of $3 billion annually, an unknown share of which will flow to the TTC.

The Finch West LRT will offer connections to both local and regional transit services, including GO Transit, Mississauga’s MiWay, York Region’s Viva, and Brampton’s Züm. This is expected to bring 230,000 people closer to efficient public transit.

With major construction now complete, the LRT is being handed over to the TTC as the focus shifts to the light rail vehicles and systems to ensure safety and reliability. Phil Verster, President and CEO of Metrolinx, shared: “Work will continue on testing and commissioning activities in preparation for the line opening, including starting TTC operator training.”

Local leaders expressed optimism about the project’s impact on the community. Michael Kerzner, MPP for York Centre, remarked, “Today’s announcement is yet another important milestone in our government’s efforts to build the Finch West LRT, bringing residents one step closer to the safe, fast, and more reliable transit they need to access jobs, housing, and other opportunities.” Kirsty Duncan, Member of Parliament for Etobicoke North, added, “The completion of the project is good news for our community. Families will be able to get to work, school, and the services they need more affordably, quickly, and sustainably.”

Over the next decade, the Ontario government will be investing nearly $70 billion in infrastructure and public transit to support the province’s growing population. The Finch West LRT alone is projected to have an annual ridership of 12 million passengers by 2031.

Toronto continues to await the announcement of the official opening date, but the completion of all stations and stops brings the Finch West LRT one step closer to becoming a vital part of Toronto’s transit network.
