Man charged after 1 killed, 3 injured from flying wheel striking bus on Toronto-bound QEW
A 45-year-old man has been charged after one person was killed and three others were injured after a loose wheel struck a bus on the Queen Elizabeth Way in St. Catharines on Friday.
Provincial police say just after 3:30 p.m. a wheel from a passenger van came off and struck a pickup truck before going through the windshield of a coach bus on the Toronto-bound lanes of the highway just past the Garden City Skyway Bridge.
A 48-year-old man from Toronto aboard the bus was pronounced dead at the scene while three other passengers were taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
There were no other injuries reported among the 35 passengers on the bus at the time of the incident.
On Saturday, provincial police charged a 45-year-old man from New York State with operating an unsafe motor vehicle. Investigators say he was the one driving the minivan that the wheel came off of.
The Toronto-bound lanes of the QEW at Glendale reopened to traffic just after 11 p.m. Friday.
