‘Gotta be Tempo-rary,’ WNBA unveils the Toronto Tempo, but some locals think the team name is missing a beat – NOW Toronto
The Toronto Tempo is Canada’s first WNBA team, but some Torontonians think the name is not hitting the mark.
The announcement came on Thursday morning, with the name intended to be a reflection of the fast-paced rhythm of “our country and the game of basketball.”
“Tempo is pace. It’s speed. It’s a heartbeat. And it’s what you feel when you step into the streets of this city, and in the energy of the people who call Canada home,” President of the Toronto Tempo Teresa Resch said in a press release.
“As Canada’s WNBA team, I know the Tempo will set our own pace, move at a championship cadence, and inspire people across this country.”
The name was also designed to work in both French and English – Canada’s official languages – a purposeful initiative to have an inclusive brand for fans across the country.
The logo features a “T” in the middle of a forward-leaning basketball, meant to represent the team’s desire for progress. In true Toronto fashion, six lines are shown behind the basketball, an ode to the five players on the court and the most important sixth player in the game: the fans.
“Tempo reflects what fans can expect from this team – including, of course, the in-game experience at the arena,” continued Resch.
“The sounds of the court. The beat of the music. The passion of the fans around you and the intensity of the players on the floor. Capturing all that energy, excitement and feeling was crucial as we chose the name for Canada’s WNBA team.”
Toronto Tempo was born out of a public engagement forum across Canada, where more than 10,000 people submitted ideas and inspiration for the name.

Since the big reveal, Canadians are divided on the name and logo. While some can’t wait to begin chanting for Toronto’s latest team, others are hoping that some adjustments can be made before the ladies hit the court. Now Toronto asked locals on X if they liked the name, and so far, more than 60 per cent have voted against it.
“This gotta be Tempo-rary, cause I expected better than this,” one user commented under the team’s Instagram post.
“I like it!! That rolls off the tongue and is easy to remember,” another user wrote.
“This looks like if the Indiana Pacers and New Balance had a baby,” another Instagram user said.
“I like the name, but I feel like they butchered the logo. It’s too bland and they could’ve done a lot better with the design and color scheme,” one Reddit user wrote.
The team is the WNBA’s 14th franchise, and The Toronto Tempo will begin playing at Toronto’s Coca-Cola Coliseum in 2026.
