Explosive device found at U of T Scarborough campus detonated, 2 buildings evacuated: police | CBC News
An explosive device found at the University of Toronto Scarborough campus on Tuesday has been detonated after two buildings were evacuated following reports of a suspicious package, police say.
A K9 unit is now checking the campus for further devices, police said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
Toronto Police say they received report of a suspicious package at 3:46 p.m. Campus safety staff found the package in the Environmental Sciences and Chemistry building during a regular patrol, the school says.
The Environmental Sciences and Chemistry building was evacuated and the Instructional Centre building was also evacuated later in the day “out of an abundance of caution,” the school said.
“We are taking every precaution,” the university said in a post on X.
Toronto Fire crews were been dispatched for a hazardous material Level 2 call, which involves suspected chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosives. Hazardous materials trucks and support vehicles were on scene Tuesday.
Military Trail is closed to vehicles from Ellesmere Road to Morningside Avenue, the school said. Parking lots G and J are also closed as police investigate, and people are advised to stay away from the area.
No injuries have been reported.
Daycare and Camp U of T pickups can be done from main campus, UTSC said.
“Parents and caregivers who have picked up kids but cannot leave campus can wait in the Student Centre,” the school said.
