Explore Toronto this Autumn

Once the glorious summer is over, the seasonal shift into autumn allows you to enjoy some of Toronto’s 1,500 parks and green spaces. Do as the locals do and enjoy the sunny days and bluebird skies in an urban park such as Trinity-Bellwoods or High Park, both of which turn beautiful shades of rouge and rust during autumn’s display of foliage. British Airways makes flying to Canada simple all year round, and through British Airways Holidays you can also book your car and hotels.

In East Toronto, hit one of the urban walking and cycling trails, which run through the Don River Valley Park threading the neighbourhoods of Corktown, Riverdale Park and Bloor Street East. It’s also connected to the Evergreen Brick Works, a brilliant green space that’s set in an abandoned brick factory run. Here you can hop on a nature trail with stunning views of the CN Tower, visit a healing garden or shop at one of the weekly artisan, vintage and garden markets. It also hosts Toronto’s largest farmers’ market, where Ontario’s best producers flock every Saturday morning.

Autumn is also a good time to take a ferry and explore the scenery of the Toronto Islands. Centre Island Pier gives stunning views of the Toronto skyline, or if you’d prefer something mysterious, head to Gibraltar Point Lighthouse – rumour has it that it’s haunted. After that, hike to one of the four beaches and end on a chilled note.

Alternatively, nip to the Craft Beer Market Toronto in the Financial District, home to Ontario’s largest draft beer selection, with more than 160 taps. Halloween is a big deal here. Brave Martino Manor, a haunted house and outdoor maze; catch a horror flick at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival (16-20 October, 2024), or scare yourself silly at Legends of Horror, an immersive experience at Casa Loma, the city’s Gothic castle.

The best ways to experience Niagara Falls

One of the most recognisable natural wonders in the world, the great Niagara Falls famously straddles the border between the United States and Canada.

By autumn the summer crowds have thinned out and each evening the trio of falls is lit up in rainbow colours.

The largest and most dramatic of the three is Horseshoe Falls, which lies on the Canadian side. Niagara City Cruises offer a choice of trips, including the Voyage to the Falls cruise, where you hear the roar of Horseshoe Falls up close. Another way to experience its raw power is the Journey Behind the Falls, which takes visitors through 130-year old tunnels to an observation deck behind the falls.

For a real treat, dine at Table Rock House, a farm-to-table restaurant which serves locally sourced dishes with views overlooking Horseshoe Falls.

For the ultimate in thrilling Niagara Falls experiences, there’s really only one way to see them, and that’s by helicopter. Niagara Helicopters offer 12-minute flights over the cascading falls, plus sweeping views across Lake Erie and as far as Toronto’s city skyline.
