A stretch of Highway 401 in Toronto was closed early Wednesday after a transport truck hit a barrier and burst into flames, provincial police say.

The collision happened around 3 a.m. just west of the exits for the Don Valley Parkway and Highway 404.

The truck driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries, OPP said in a series of posts on X, formerly Twitter.

Westbound express lanes were closed from the Don Valley Parkway to Leslie Street, while the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) tunnel from Highway 404 southbound to Highway 401 westbound was also shut down.

Police said it could take until noon to clear the crash scene.

Drivers are being urged to avoid the area if at all possible.
