UHN acquires building to expand cancer care and research in Toronto

Canada’s University Health Network (UHN) has expanded its healthcare infrastructure with the acquisition of a 15-storey building at 522 University Avenue in Toronto’s Discovery District, aimed at enhancing cancer care, research, and education.

This purchase will address the growing healthcare demands and support the expansion of UHN’s programmes, particularly in cancer care and surgical oncology.

UHN president and CEO Kevin Smith said: “The addition of 522 University Avenue increases our capacity to drive innovation and research in cancer prevention, early cancer detection, diagnostics and treatment, as well enable the introduction of new and expanded programmes at UHN.”

The new property will bolster the capabilities of UHN’s Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and Toronto General Hospital, providing additional space for clinical and research initiatives.

It will also serve as a training site for UHN’s Michener Institute of Education and partner academic institutions with healthcare learners.

The acquisition of the new building is a move to create room for new clinical and research breakthroughs in cancer, the development of new treatments and technologies, and the education of future cancer experts.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said: “While far too many families across Ontario are affected by cancer each year, UHN’s Princess Margaret Cancer Centre is there to provide life-saving care.”

The services planned for the new facility at 522 University Avenue include improved supportive care, particularly in cancer mental health, an early cancer detection programme with a focus on cancer prevention, and a new prostate cancer centre.

Additionally, a centralised Cancer Digital Intelligence team will be established to improve care through advanced data analytics and AI.

The operations of the new building will receive financial support from the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.

The acquisition was completed in collaboration with the UHN Foundation, the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, and Colliers.
