Woman dead, 3 injured after early morning shooting in Brampton parking lot | CBC News
A woman has died after a shooting in Brampton, Peel paramedics say.
Peel police said they responded to a call near Rutherford Road S. and Selby Road around 6 a.m. on Saturday.
A vehicle fired shots at another vehicle that was parked in a plaza with six people inside, Public and Media Relations Officer Richard Chin said on Saturday morning.
He said a woman was pronounced dead on scene. Peel paramedics said the woman was shot multiple times.
Another woman was taken to a trauma centre in critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds, paramedics said. Chin said the woman had serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
A man and a woman were also taken to hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries, paramedics said.
There is no information on the suspect vehicle at this time, Chin said.
Chin said the homicide bureau is investigating the shooting. Initial information suggests it was a targeted shooting, he said.
Anyone with information about the incident or dashcam footage from the area is asked to contact investigators, Chin said.
Rutherford Road is closed between Glidden and Selby roads.
Business owners, workers say area becoming unsafe
Several people who live and work in and around the commercial plaza told CBC Toronto on Saturday that they felt crime was becoming more common in the area.
Tejinder Chaudhary, who works at a business in the plaza, said the area has changed in the last few decades.
“It’s not safe,” he said. “I came here 25 years back, it was a very peaceful area here. Even GTA was peaceful. And now, every day we are hearing something happening. Cars are getting stolen. People are getting scared.”
One auto repair business was struck by a stray bullet in Saturday’s shooting. Owner Kenny Singh said Saturday afternoon that he was still waiting for investigators to let him back inside.
Singh said it’s the second shooting in the plaza in the past couple of years, and it’s hard to cope with another violent incident near his business.
“We were just there yesterday, and today somebody died right in front,” he said. “I don’t know what’s going on.”
Officer Chin said investigators will look at “any previous shootings in the area, or even not in the area, to see if there’s any similarities.”
