Toronto Transit Commission Receives First Electric Buses

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) has received the first two of 340 new battery-electric buses.

This milestone was celebrated during an event attended by Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, Minister Gary Anandasangaree, Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, TTC Board Chair Jamaal Myers, and Interim CEO Greg Percy.

The event marked a significant step in TTC’s journey toward full fleet electrification by 2040.

The introduction of these new electric buses follows a joint 700 million CAD investment announced in 2023 by the federal government and the City of Toronto, aimed at transforming TTC’s bus fleet into one of the largest electric fleets in North America.

By 2026, TTC is expected to have 400 battery-electric buses, with these two vehicles being the first of the 340 new units to arrive. The funding also supports infrastructure upgrades, including the installation of charging stations at seven TTC bus garages.

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland said:

That is why we are delivering unprecedented investments in reliable and sustainable public transit infrastructure. Today’s arrival of the TTC’s new all-electric buses—just one of the many ways we are helping the TTC grow—will make Torontonians’ commutes quicker and cleaner.

The new buses have been manufactured by New Flyer Industries Canada and Nova Bus to serve communities across Toronto.

Once the entire fleet is received, battery-electric buses will account for approximately 20% of TTC’s bus fleet.
