When the Best Chef Awards were honouring Best Pizza Chef, Ryan Baddeley, of Pizzeria Badiali, came in at No. 32.

Baddeley was the only Canadian in the Top 100, which was dominated by Italians — including No. 1 pizza chef, Franco Pepe, of Pepe, in Grani.

Baddeley’s selection was met with mixed reviews on Reddit, with one person saying, “I didn’t think it was that great.”

However, another called it “Incredible pizza, when you have it fresh it’s mind-blowing.”

Another person added, “If the scale is 0 to New York pizza, Badiali is like an 8. This is great in terms of pizza in Toronto.”

Pizzeria Badiali is the creation of three Toronto chefs — Ryan Baddeley (Osteria Rialto), Nick Halligan and Owen Walker (El Rey & Quetzal) — who first teamed up at Bar Isabel.

Lineups for pies and slices at Badiali, located at 181 Dovercourt Rd., have become infamous, so a second location was almost inevitable.

The Annex will serve as home for the newest Badiali restaurant, Westbank Corp. — the development company behind the Mirvish Village development where Honest Ed’s once stood — confirmed to BlogTO.

An exact opening date is unknown, but Baddeley said in an interview with East Room that the new location could be ready “by the end of this year.”
